Top of the Morning

Farmers Market open today.

The Bedford Farmers Market will be open on the public square from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The market will feature locally grown fruits and vegetables, fresh cut flowers, jellies and jams, baked goods, handmade products and more. Music will be performed by Brandon Rader in the gazebo from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Programs on apple cider, trees and food preservation will be presented.

The programs will be presented this weekend at Blue Knob State Park. Visitors can experience the apple cider making process from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 1 at the Buck Hill Amphitheater through a demonstration on an apple cider press that has been donated to the park by the Elmer and Mary Dibert family. Volunteers will be needed to help work the press. A scavenger hunt and chance to make a tree leaf booklet about common trees of the area will be offered from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 2 at the amphitheater. An introduction to canning, dehydrating and freezing food will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 3 at the Group Camp 1 dining hall. Anyone in need of accommodations due to a disability should call 814-276-3576.

“Rock and Mineral Treasures” program planned.

Shawnee State Park will present the program at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 in the Historic & Interpretive Center at the main office. The simplicity, yet uniqueness, of rocks and minerals, along with some of the facts and stories, will be the focus of this geologic adventure. Free family packets of common rocks and minerals, plus a few treasures, will be given out, and used, throughout the program. For more information, call 814-733-4892. If needing accommodations due to a disability, call 814-733-4218.

Canner gauge testing offered.

Bedford County Extension Office is offering pressure canner gauge testing for home canners. Testing will be done on Mondays from 2-3 p.m. or people may leave their gauges at any time during office hours for testing later. Bring the canner lid with the pressure gauge still in it. The Extension office is located at 120 W. John St., Bedford. The office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 814-623-4800 to make an appointment for testing or for additional information.

Senior Expo is scheduled.

The event, hosted by state Rep. Jesse Topper and state Sen. Pat Stefano, will be held at the Bedford Fairgrounds on Sept. 1 from 10 a.m.-noon. It is free and open to the public. The expo will give residents the opportunity to learn about resources and programs provided by state government, as well as local nonprofit and community groups in the area.
